Sponge Bob, Barney promote 'gay' tolerance
61,000 schools to receive "We Are Family" video with lesson plan

SpongeBob SquarePants is one of the popular children's TV characters appearing in a new 'tolerance' video. Based on the 1970s hit song "We Are Family," the video will be distributed to public and private elementary schools nationwide March 11, along with lesson plans for teachers, points out the American Family Association. The distribution, sponsored by FedEx, will coincide with the video's broadcast March 11 on Nickelodeon, PBS, and the Disney Channel in celebration of the proposed National We Are Family Day. AFA researcher Ed Vitagliano sees the project as an "open door" to a secondary discussion of homosexuality, noting the the foundation has a "tolerance pledge" on it's website that children and others are encouraged to sign, which includes sexual orientation. "While we want everyone to respect other people's beliefs, we do not consider it appropriate for children's television to be used in an effort to indoctrinate children to accept homosexuality," he said. Vitagliano says the foundation is employing a bait-and-switch approach, with popular children's figures such as Arthur, Dora the Explorer, JoJo, Clifford the Big Red Dog, Big Bird and Bob the Builder. The objective is to get children to the foundation's website "and there they're given the full pitch about homosexuality," he said. Video producer Christopher Cerf called the video an "unprecedented event." "For the first time characters from all of the important kids shows came together to appear in the same video," he said in a November news release. "The producers and performers from each show embraced the spirit and message of this project." The We Are Family Foundation was founded by singer-songwriter Nile Rodgers, who wrote the hit song recorded in 1979 by Sister Sledge. The video was financed by a grant from the Toni Mendez Shapiro estate. "Cooperation and unity are the most important values we can teach children," Rodgers said. "We believe that this is the essential first step to loving thy neighbor." The We Are Family Foundation says its partners in the production are the Anti-Defamation League, Crown Theatres, Disney Channel, FedEx, Nickelodeon, HIT Entertainment, Nile Rodgers/Sony Publishing/The Bernard Edwards Estate/Warner Chapel, Nelvana, PBS, Scholastic, Sesame Workshop, Toni Mendez Shapiro Estate, and WGBH-TV in Boston. A Federal Express spokesman said the company is "proud" to provide shipping for the project. "Promoting diversity is part of our corporate culture at FedEx," said William G. Margaritis, senior vice president, worldwide corporate communications. Characters appearing in the video are from award-winning shows including "Arthur," "Barney," "Bear in the Big Blue House," "Between the Lions," "Blue's Clues, Bob the Builder," "The Book of Pooh," "Clifford the Big Red Dog," "Dora the Explorer," "Jimmy Neutron," "JoJo's Circus," "Kim Possible," "Lilo and Stitch: The Series," "Little Mermaid," "Madeline," "The Magic School Bus," "The Muppet Show," "The Proud Family," "Rugrats," "Sesame Street," "SpongeBob SquarePants," and "Zoom." The video also features cameo appearances by entertainers Bill Cosby, Diana Ross and Whoopi Goldberg. End of article WEBSERVANT NOTE: Interestingly, another pro-homosexual website has a very similar domain name to the We Are Family Foundation website, it's We Are Family.  According to its website, "We Are Family" has the primary purpose of "fighting homophobia."  No doubt, many children will be ending up at sites like We Are Family.  Coincidence? The top of the website's home page reads, "We Are Family is a voice of informed straight, lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgendered people who have chosen to love and support our relatives and friends by working to spread truth about homosexuality. Our focus is on young people because they generally feel so desperately alone." A children's music video that conservatives charge is part of an effort to encourage acceptance of homosexuality is being distributed to more than 60,000 schools nationwide, producers said Thursday.

The video features about 100 children's TV characters including SpongeBob SquarePants, Miss Piggy and Oscar the Grouch singing the 1979 disco hit "We Are Family." It will be accompanied by a teaching guide that promotes tolerance of diversity.

"The opportunity to bring that message to children around the entire country is truly exciting," said Caryl Stern, senior associate national director of the Anti-Defamation League. "We know at ADL that people are not born as little haters, we learn to hate. And just as we learn to hate, we have to unlearn to hate."

To produce and distribute the video, the ADL teamed with the We Are Family Foundation, a nonprofit organization founded by music producer Nile Rodgers, who co-wrote "We Are Family."

TV networks and production companies also are involved, and FedEx has agreed to ship the videos for free.

The effort sparked controversy in January when the American Family Association, in an article by the editor of its monthly journal, charged that the video had a pro-gay subtext.

"On the surface, the project may appear to be a worthwhile attempt to foster greater understanding of cultural differences," wrote Ed Vitagliano. "However, a short step beneath the surface reveals that one of the differences being celebrated is homosexuality."

The video was also criticized by James Dobson, founder of Focus on the Family, who alluded to SpongeBob SquarePants' role in a "pro-homosexual video" during remarks to a pre-inauguration dinner in Washington.

In a telephone interview Thursday, Vitagliano said he does not object to the "innocuous" video itself but to the accompanying teaching guide, which he said "distorts the definition of family to produce a nontraditional model."

Vitagliano pointed to a section where children are asked who is in a family, and if they say "a mommy," "a daddy," "a sister" or "a brother," the teacher is prodded to "ask further questions of the class."

"We feel that this is part of an attempt to include same-sex couples in the institution of marriage and the family," he said.

Rodgers, who joined ADL officials and others at an event promoting the video, said the project is not about sexual orientation.

"We're not talking about sex at all," he said. "This is for young children."

Christopher Cerf, the author and children's TV producer who's another of the video's creators, said he was "amazed" by the criticism.

"At first I thought this was so ridiculous that it's funny," he said.

The Tyranny of Judges

Thomas Jefferson’s worst nightmare seems to have come to pass. Jefferson was very concerned that judges would become despots and overrule the rights of the people. In 1820, he wrote to a friend,

“You seem to consider the judges as the ultimate arbiters of all constitutional questions, a very dangerous doctrine indeed, and one which would place us under the despotism of an oligarchy. Our judges are as honest as other men, and not more so.”

Jefferson realized that the Constitution protects the will of the people, not the opinions of judges. But instead of protecting the people’s vote on Proposition 8, Judge Walker used his judicial office to promote the agenda of a small minority who want to change the definition of marriage.

The definition of marriage, instituted by God and practiced by every culture since the creation of man, is under attack in America today. There is no discrimination against homosexuals in America with regard to marriage, no unequal treatment. Homosexuals are equally as free to marry as any other American. Their problem is that the definition of marriage itself requires every person to marry someone of the opposite sex. The fact that homosexuals don’t want to enter into marriage as it has always been defined doesn’t give them the right to use the courts to change that definition to suit their wishes. Changing the definition of marriage, as Judge Walker has done, undermines the most important building block of any society.

Judge Walker described the “ability to marry” as a fundamental right that cannot be denied to gays and lesbians. But this conclusion is complete and utter nonsense. Every society in history has placed restrictions on the “ability to marry.” You can’t marry your sister. You can’t legally be married to two or three people at the same time. You can’t marry someone who is already married. And you can’t marry someone of the same sex. Marriage by definition involves two people of opposite sexes who are—theoretically, at least—biologically capable of reproducing and forming families.
